Arcadia Florida is a fun and exciting quaint small town especially if you love Antiques, Collectibles, Rodeos, good food or just plain Socializing. Arcadia was considered one of the wildest towns during the 1890s, with cattle ranching and cattle wars, but in the past 10 years has developed into an Antique and Collectible wonderland. The downtown Arcadia merchants have worked hard in becoming ``Floridas Best Antiquing Town``, with up to 30 Antique Stores, Specialty Shops, Restaurants, plus hundreds of Antique Dealers. For this reason, Antique Dealers from the Midwest, Southern States, east coast of United States, and all of Florida shop Arcadia on a regular basis.
The excitement starts as you drive down quaint Oak Street, and see all the colorful historic buildings. Most downtown buildings were built around 1905, and are painted in an array of colors more colors than in the rainbow. These colors not only are beautiful to the eye, but also show the individuality of each business. You can see the personality of each business even before you enter their doors. Many stores have their favorite flowers welcoming customers to their doors, and their favorite items in their artistically merchandised windows.
Get ready to talk. All the downtown stores are friendly family owned and run, so you will get to know all the stores, merchandise and their families. Many stores have their mothers, fathers, or kids helping run their businesses. When you enter each store you will find each has an individual look, style, music, and feel. The business owner`s tastes are usually reflected in their store whether it is primitives, oak, retro, Shabby Chic, Jewelry, military, etc. Whatever your taste, you will find it in Arcadia.
It is easy to shop Downtown Arcadia. Park your car once, and you won`t have to get in it again until you leave. All this fantastic shopping is in a 4 block area. There is plenty of easy parking too. There are free parking lots behind almost every building along with free on street parking.
In order to shop all the downtown businesses, it will take a full day if not two. When you get hungry, eat lunch at one of the two Restaurants on Oak Steet. Or even better eat lunch at one restaurant and dessert at another. Need a pick me up? After a long day of shopping, get an Ice Cream, it will give you the boost you need to continue shopping. There is even a beautiful park where you can relax, or even eat your lunch. For your comfort, Public Restroom are also located in the park.
Please be patient with the businesses, for each one has it`s own hours. All are small family businesses, and all have their own lives which are different from their neighbors. Antique dealers can`t order their merchandise from a company. They drive to Auctions, Flea Markets, Estate Sales, Other Stores, even Garage Sales to find their treasures. Antiques are not easy to find so dealers drive hundreds to thousands of miles weekly, and many make trips to other states. Please call your favorite stores to make sure the days and hours of operation. Most stores are open Wednesday Sunday.
We guarantee you will arrive as a customer, but will leave a friend to most if not all the stores.
Written by Marc Washicheck Cherry Hill Antiques

Cherry Hill Antiques is finally back home. Eleven months after Hurricane Charley, Jeanne, and Frances redecorated the building, Cherry Hill has reopened at the old location, 120 W. Oak Street Arcadia.

Cherry Hill has been located in the 4800 square foot, 1920`s historic bank building for over 7 of the 11 years in which they have been in Arcadia. It was well worth the wait: new walls, electricity, air conditioning, carpeting, higher ceilings, more windows, new color scheme, and even more space. Cherry Hill has enlarged with two new rooms, and a third to come soon.

Cherry Hill still carries everything from Primitives to Retro, M.A.Hadley to Royal Doulton, Linens to Quilts, Hull to Cambridge, Shabby Chic/Cottage Style, and even has a year round Christmas area. More space means the addition of new Antique Merchants specializing in Depression Glass, Royal Doulton, Oak Furniture, and Shabby Chic/Cottage Style. Cherry Hill has also opened anew room called ``Skid Row`` which has only Clearance items in it, all have huge discounts, and are priced to sell.

Decorating still abounds a Cherry Hill, where all booths are organized, colorized, merchandised, and decorated. Be sure you look up when you are in the store, there is usually as much hanging from the ceiling as on the floor, and includes decorated ladders, porch swings, screen doors, windows, and old signs. Customers are heard commenting on the ``High Comfort Level`` and how ``Visually Stimulating`` the store is with the decorating, lightly scented potpourri, and swing music playing.
That long waiting period was used to enlarge, refine and perfect the website CherryHillAntiques.com. The huge website is not only retail, but also includes information on Arcadia, Calendar of Events, The Antimal Welfare League Auction, News on Depression Glass, Decorating ideas, Recipes, Helpful Hints, and much more. You never know what you will find either on line or in the shop which it fun and exciting.

Make sure you visit our new and improved store, and feel free to call us at 863 993 2344

Article written by Marc Washicheck Cherry Hill Antiques printed in the Antique Shoppe Newspaper September, 2005

County History 00

Desoto County was first conceived in May 1887. It was named after the Spanish explorer, Hernando DeSoto. It was cut out of Manatee County with the county seat in Pine Level. The first meeting held in the new county was in July 1887, to vote on a new county seat. On August 25, 1887, 13 voting precincts were approved, and the survey can be found in the first Record of Deeds at the county court house. An election was held in December of the same year, but it failed to bring a majority vote.
The forerunners for the new county seat were Fort Ogden, Brownville, Nocatee, Punta Gorda, Pine Level, and Arcadia with Nocatee as the favorite. Sources reveal there was a yellow fever outbreak that quarantined many communities, so a second vote was postponed. On August 4, 1888 a second vote was taken, and again failed to produce a majority vote. Finally, on November 6, 1888, a third vote was taken, and Arcadia won the county seat by 21 votes. At the time, Arcadia wasn`t much of a town at all. Residents of the county soon started moving closer to the new county seat which caused Arcadia to grow, but drove many communities to extinction such as Pine Level, and Fort Winder to name a few.
The railroads that were completed through Desoto County changed the growth of the county, and brought wealthy for many. Phosphate was discovered on the banks of the Peace River that flows through the county. Mining of this mineral brought much prosperity for many years. In 1921, Desoto County was divided into present day Desoto, Charlotte, Hardee, Glades and Highlands counties.
Today, Arcadia is the ``Heart`` of the county, and a very visible pride in their history can be found virtually everywhere in the city. Most of the historical buildings you find today were built after 1905 when on Thanksgiving day a fire destroyed a major portion of the town. Much like it was over a hundred years ago, Desoto Counties main source of economy relies on agriculture, citrus groves, phosphate and cattle.

It was a determined ``pioneer spirit`` that brought the first ``cracker`` settlers to the wild and rugged wilderness of the lower Peace River Valley before the War Between The States. They came mostly from South Georgia and the Carolinas to raise cattle and farm a land still inhabited by panthers, bears and wolves.
The valley became a frontier gateway to southwest Florida, and the Arcadia area survived the Civil War, the range wars of the area`s turbulent early days, a disastrous fire, the boom and bust of the 1920s, and the state`s explosive growth of the 1970s and 1980s. Within this city`s 58 block National Historic District are some of the best examples of Florida`s late 1880s, and early 1900s ``boomtown`` architecture.

Arcadia was condidered one of the wildest towns in Florida during the 1890s due to a series of ``Cattle wars`` in which many lives were lost over cattle rustling, and other issues. Railroad played a major role in the development of the city. Arcadia was once connected with such cites as Bradenton, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Boca Grande, and Punta Gorda by the Florida Southern Railroad.
Agriculture, especially cattle and citrus, has played a major part in DeSoto`s history. Today the county is one of Florida`s top citrus, cattle and watermelon producers. Arcadia is home to the oldest rodeo in the southeastern USA, the famous Arcadia Rodeos.
Arcadia became one of Florida`s first five ``Main Street Cities`` in 1985. The National Historic District was established shortly afterward. These days downtown Arcadia has become known as southwest Florida`s finest historic district, and largest antiquing center with more than two dozen shops and stores.
Adapted from information provided by George Lane Jr.

            History of Cherry Hill Antiques

Cherry Hill Country Road Show started in 1980 as an arts and crafts home party business in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Everything sold was made by me or my mother. I named it Cherry Hill because I lived on a large hill with numerous Cherry Trees which I planted. We added the Country Road Show to our name because we are bohemian (Gypsies) and history taught us they traveled from town to town showing their wares and performing. In a sense we did the same thing. We went from town to town demonstrating and selling our wares. The business soon outgrew my apartment and I had to open a small 300 square foot store on the south side of Milwaukee called Bayview. Bayview is a very fashionable, beautiful old neighborhood right on Lake Michigan. It wasn't long before I had a full time Store Manager/ painter, 2 other full time people and 6 part time students which undercoated, sanded, stained, cleaned and whatever else was needed. I also had 4 demonstrators out 6 days a week selling at home parties and selling wholesale to local stores and large department stores. We became so busy we couldn't keep up with the orders so we had to start selling some purchased items such as quilts, jewelry, potpourri, candles, soaps etc.

After 39 years and growing up in Wisconsin I was very tired of the cold and snow so I decided to move to Florida. The last winter I lived in Milwaukee it snowed almost everyday. I had to shovel snow three times a day.

In 1994 I moved to Florida and opened a booth at a flea market in Punta Gorda. That is where I met well known antique dealer Christie Agulair. Christie taught me a lot about antiques and antique dealers and we developed a mutual respected friendship. I also met another wonderful antique dealer who owned one of the first antique stores in Arcadia and rented some space with her. In order to get an array of customers I rented a room in a little gift shop on Placida, and a large space in a mall in Fort Myers. That was in about 1996. It didn't take long to outgrow them so I opened a 6000 square foot store in Port Charlotte. After a year I decided Arcadia had much potential and rented a space in the Old Opera House, which just opened their doors and was the first to rent space in Arcadia. I was there until a new place was opening and it sounded great. I moved into the Veranda House which was an old southern apartment building with 8 apartments. Each apartment was made into a little quant shop. I wanted to get uptown so I left the Veranda House and moved uptown next to the Hot Fudge Shop until The Mundell building became available. I wanted that building for a long time and my dream came true in 1999. I moved in, used $600.00 in paint, opened within 2 weeks and have been there ever since.

I was dabbling in antiques all the while but when I rented The Mundell building I had room to grow into a complete antique store.

Hurricane Charley, Jean and Francis came through on August 13 2004 and really redecorated the store. The entire store had to be gutted, demolded and put back together. We were out of that store for 11 months but relocated for the short term right next door in a 980 square foot store which I also rented and is attached to the main store. It was worth the wait with the new walls, ceiling, lighting, carpeting, air conditioning etc. There was even a bonus. They found a few cute windows under the walls and opened them up too.

Cherry Hill Antiques has grown into more than just an antique store. It now includes a antique seminar business named Cherry Hill Collectors Club Antique Educational Seminars which developed into Cherry Hill Seminar Productions. It is also complimented by this website, Cherry Hill On Line. All three keep growing and feeding each other.

The building that Cherry Hill Antiques has been located in for over 6 years started out as the first bank of Desoto County The Florida Trust and Banking Company. The building began life humbly housing an automobile repair shop. The Arcadia Garage was constructed in 1910 by J.C. Hickman as a one story brick building at 120 W. Oak St. Hickman not only operated the garage but was the town`s Cadillac dealer and Michelin tire dealer.
His garage was the training ground for two men who themselves became local merchants. ``Dutch`` Nabell, a salesman, later became a Texaco dealer. John Balasok, Hickman`s master mechanic, opened his own garage years later at the corner of South Orange Avenue and West Magnolia Street.
Hickman purchased the entire lot in November 1919 from Albert Gilchrist, nearly a decade after opening the shop. Apparently shortly thereafter, Hickman sold the building to The Hughes Trust and Banking Co., which had been organized in 1917.
Hughes Trust changed its name to Florida Trust and Banking Co. in 1920. In addition to general banking, the bank engaged in insurance and abstract business.
In April, 1925, Barron G. Collier purchased stock in Florida Trust. He already was a director and large stockholder in the First National Bank across the street. Locally, he owned the telephone system and its building, as well as the Union Bus Station.
In November of that year, the building was remodeled, and a second story was added to the building. Ralph Cannon contracted for the work at a cost of about $40,000,
Florida Trust began the year of 1929 with resources and liabilities of $529,849. By July, with the nationwide bank crash rapidly approaching, that tally dropped to less than $18,000.
By August, Collier was trying to assert confidence about the local banks as the ``run on the banks`` began.
By January 1930, Florida Trust and Banking had merged with First National Bank to avoid bankruptcy and protect the main stockholders. First National declared bankruptcy on Jan 28, 1932.
By July 1933, Barron Collier was petitioning federal court in Tampa for more time to adjust his debts. While the more than 100 companies he owned included banks, telephone companies, bus lines, shipping lines, and vast holdings in real estate, he could not immediately raise the money to satisfy his creditors.
Collier died March 14, 1939.
The Florida Trust building was purchased at auction for $6,600 by Nate E. Reese, Jr, on March 11, 1936. George Cavas later bought the building. George operated Cavas Bar for years. After Cavas death, the building was willed to his adopted daughter, France Manos Smith.

Parts taken from The Arcadian, Wednesday, December 19, 1984

Lipizzan Stallions 00

            Lipizzan Stallions

See the fabulous flying white Lipizzans
perform the rare and beautiful
Airs Above the Ground Mounted
as seen in Walt Disney`s
``Miracle of the White Stallions``.

Visitors are welcome to come watch the Winter Training Sessions
beginning Thursday, December 13, 2007 through the end of April.
These sessions are free to the public.
However, donations are greatly appreciated.

At once intense and focused on precision, yet aesthetically beautiful, the Herrmanns` Lipizzans present a widely varied program. Classical dressage on long lines (the first step in dressage training after the old European tradition) and an exquisite Pas de Trois (wherein three stallions are presented in a drill of balletic grace and precision) combined with the dramatic and difficult Airs Above the Ground to form the basis of the first half of the Lipizzans` presentation.

Exceptionally difficult maneuvers such as the Courbette, the Capriole, and the Levade, all highly refined leaps performed only by stallions of great strength, intelligence and endurance are included in the celebrated Airs Above the Ground.

Courbette The horse does several jumps on his hind legs while holding his fore legs off the ground.

Capriole The horse leaps from all four feet and, at the peak of elevation, strikes out violently with his hind legs.

Levade The horse rises on his haunches from a standstill position and tucks his fore legs under him as he maintains a 45 degree angle. The Levade is often the pose of classical equestrian sculpture and art.

Have you ever ridden a Lipizzan stallion?
Don`t miss the chance of a lifetime!
From January till the end of May, we offer private lessons on our stallions
at the Spanish American Riding School of the Herrmann`s Original Royal Lipizzaner Stallions in Myakka City.
(by appointment only)

Dress rehearsals will be May 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the ranch:

Herrmanns` Royal Lipizzan Stallions
32755 Singletary Road
Myakka City, Florida 34251

Show Times:
Thursdays and Fridays 3:00 p.m.
Saturdays 10:00 a.m.

Reservations requested for groups of 20 or more.

Please call 941 322 1501 to make your reservation.
For Booking information call the above number or send an email to HLipizzans@aol.com

We hope you will visit and support this lost art.

This wonderful sign is owned by Maddy`s Antiques, and is attached to a very old tree. Looks so great with branches and leaves framing sign. Great artistic look.
Maddy`s Antiques has been the cornerstone of the antique district in downtown Arcadia for over 10 years. The store boasts a wide variety of genuine antiques, specializing in early country items and American primitives. They also have the largest selection of vintage sports memorabilia. The sports memorabilia contains an extensive collection of baseball and golf merchandise.
Maddy`s Antiques is located at 313 West Oak Street, and phone number is 863 494 2500.
Stop by and see the friendly and knowledgeable folks Thursday 10:00 4:30, Friday 12:00 4:30, and Saturday 10:00 4:30. Also be sure to check this website for Maddy`s Country And Primitives Antiques Shows.

Sadly, as of July 1, 2005, visitors to Arcadia will no longer see the Maddys Antique sign. The City Council made Maddy`s Antiques and Cherry Hill Antiques take their signs down.
Sign or no sign, Maddy`s is still the best place to find American primitives.

In todays busy world signs tell us where we can go, which why to get there, and where we should be when we arrive. Informational signs come in every color, design, size and shape imaginable, but signs are also an art form. It takes much work, designing, and color coordinating to make a sign be pleasing to the eye and informative to your mind. There are many people that see old signs as a piece of artwork.
Old or Vintage signs document a part of History. Advertising signs often evoke time and place even more strongly than old furniture does, because there messages speak of human enterprises or activities. There are Collector Clubs all over the world who pay large amounts of money for the best signs. The same is true today with our newer signs. In years to come these sings will document our history, and will be worth money too.
I went around Arcadia, and took photo`s of signs which I think as an artist, with an artist eye are artistic, informative, or just plain fun.

Written by Marc Washicheck Cherry Hill Antiques
