BIOGRAPHY: Wanda M. Carter

Wanda Carter was born and raised in East Detroit, Michigan. She attended Wayne State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling.

She worked as an educator for 30.5 years in Michigan, California, and Germany. She began as a kindergarten teacher and retired as a high school counselor. She was a junior high counselor for 10 yrs. She was originally a music major, but switched to Early childhood Education as a junior.

She began art studies in oil portraiture, but switched to pastels in 1978. Wanda is most interested in capturing a likeness from life, as well as the personality of the subject. She prefers working from life, whether it be a portrait, still life or a landscape. She is especially interested in painting portraits of people and animals.

She has studied portraiture with Daniel Greene, Michael Del Priore, Harley Brown, and Paul Leveille. She belongs to the SW FL Pastel Society. She was a member of the Portrait Society of America and attended several conventions in Washington D.C. and Chicago. She also attended 3 International Pastel Society Conventions in Albuquerque.N.M.

She has had several one woman shows, one of which was at the Women’s Hall of Fame in Lansing, Michigan. Her work is in collections in the United States and Canada. Her work is currently on display at Creations Gallery in Punta Gorda, Florida. She welcomes commissions and has taught landscapes, still life and portraiture (pastels and oils) at the Englewood Art Center, the Visual Art Center in Punta Gorda and the Northport Art Center. She is available for 1-3 workshops. She has taken a hiatus from classroom teaching.

She has resumed her musical career and is presently playing alto sax in the Swinging Mondays BIG BAND at the Cultural Center in Port Charlotte, the Charlotte County Concert Band and Fred Capitelli’s INGROOV SWING BAND on Wednesdays at the New Day Christian Church on Peachland Blvd in Port Charlotte. She will be joining the Northport Concert Band this season.
