PUNTA GORDA
This town was formerly called Trabue, in honor of Colonel Isaac Trabue, who surveyed the land in 1882-3. Legal troubles between Colonel Trabue and the Florida Commercial Company lead to the changing of the name. The Spaniards had formerly applied the name Punta Gorda meaning "wide point" to an arm of land jutting into Charlotte Bay near the town. Until 1888, the northeast section of the town was still called Trabue.
